2023 Week 9 Bear Tracks

Bear fans, Them Bears just keep on rolling! BHP faced off against Fountain Inn on a wet and rainy Friday the 13th, and let me tell you, the only thing that was truly terrifying that night was BHP's outstanding performance. They took care of business, securing a win to maintain their perfect record. Now, the Bears are hitting the road again as they head up to Southside.

Before we dive into the game recap, I had some time to ponder non-football matters last Friday night. Combine that with the ominous date, and I came up with an intriguing question: Would Jason from the Friday the 13th series be the ultimate football player among all horror characters? In my book, the answer is a resounding yes, and here's why. First off, let's talk about his physical attributes. Standing at an imposing six feet five inches and weighing in at a solid 250 pounds, he's practically tailor-made to be a dominating defensive end. And when it comes to football, his motor never stops – he's relentless. With those violent hands, monstrous strength, and an intimidation factor that's off the charts, imagine lining up against Jason, knowing that he's coming for you, and no one can stand in his way. Is there a more obvious choice? If you think there's a better horror movie character for the gridiron, I'd love to hear it.

But enough about horror icons; let's get back to football! The Bears hosted Fountain Inn in their final home game of the regular season, and it was also senior night. Sometimes, when one team completely dominates another, you can sum up the game as a victory from the opening kickoff, and that's precisely what happened for BHP on that Friday night. Qua Alexander returned the opening kick a whopping 84 yards for a touchdown, setting the tone for the game, and the Bears didn't let up.

As we mentioned last week, we expected the Bears to return to their impressive offensive form and they did, racking up 524 total yards of offense. What's even more impressive is that BHP only needed 40 plays to do it, averaging a staggering 13.1 yards per play. Couple that with another outstanding defensive performance, holding Fountain Inn to just 7 points, and it's clear that the Bears are back to playing at the high standards we've come to expect.

Shout Outs:

I want to do something a little different from the last couple of weeks. As BHP celebrated senior night, I want to give a shout-out to all the BHP seniors. This group started their high school career during the COVID-shortened season and now have BHP back to the standard we expect.

Week 9 Preview

The Bears hit the road once again, this time making the trek up to Greenville County to face off against the Southside Tigers. Southside, to put it bluntly, has had a tough go of it this season, failing to notch a single win on their record. Their losses have piled up against the likes of Christ Church, Pickens, Walhalla, Carolina Academy, Easley, Palmetto, Wren, and Powdersville. It's been a challenging ride for the Tigers, and they're coming into this matchup on the heels of three consecutive games where they couldn't even put a single point on the scoreboard. When you tally it all up, Southside's been outscored by a jaw-dropping 307 points this season.

Let's keep this preview concise, folks. Just like in weeks past, it's abundantly clear that the Bears have the upper hand in every position as they gear up for Friday night. The key for BHP is to stick to their own standards and not let the talent disparity lull them into complacency. Personally, I've got a few wishes for this game: I'd love to see Shaheem Robbs gobble up 140 rushing yards, pushing him over the 1,000-yard mark for the season. And Marquise Henderson? Let's aim for over 200 rushing yards to keep him on track for some potentially record-breaking feats. And, of course, wouldn't a shutout on the defensive side of the ball be the icing on the cake?
