Bear Tracks Week 4 | 2018

After a short ride over to T.L. Hanna, BHP showed up hoping to put on a show as they did against Greenville. A show was presented, however BHP was the jester and Hanna the main character. Hanna showed why they are not only the shoe-in to win their division, but probably also the state championship. Although the ending outcome was extremely one sided, there were a couple of bright points for the Bears. An 80 drive for their lone TD came in the 1st half when the game was still in the balance. Getting experience against players of that caliber will only help the Bears going forward and going forward is what BHP will look to do against Pendleton this Friday night.

Week 3 Review

The showdown was set, lights were on, and the crowd gathered, but in the end T.L. Hanna showed why they are the top team in the state with a dominant win over BHP, 44-7. Hanna was really good and BHP will not see an offense or that caliber of players the rest of the season. However, a few key plays turned the game from a close back and forth match up to a lopsided affair.

On a positive note, it was great to see BHP’s R.J. Ellis back in action against T.L. Hanna. After an offseason car accident his return at any point this season was questionable. We are glad he is well and it is great to add another weapon to this BHP offense.

Week 3 Review Stats

  • Since 2014 BHP has allowed 30 or more points 11 times (in 52 games). In those 11 games BHP is 3-8.
  • Since 2014 BHP has been held to under 10 points in a game only 4 times.
  • Since 2014 BHP has been held to under 200 total yards in a game only 4 times, all 4 coming against Anderson County schools (2014, 2015 vs Westside and 2017, 2018 vs T.L. Hanna).
  • BHP’s Camden Bratcher has 8 consecutive games with 100 or more passing yards.
  • This season BHP is allowing 30.2% fewer completions per game and 31.0% fewer passing yards to opponents than in the 2017 season.
  • 83% of BHP’s total yardage this season has come on plays that gained 10 or more yards.
  • This season BHP is outscoring opponents in the 2nd and 3rd quarters 54-34 while being outscored in the 1st and 4th quarters 29-41.
  • 57% of BHPs 2018 passing TDs have come in the 2nd quarter.
  • This season BHP and BHP’s opponents have not missed an extra point (18 makes on 18 tries).
  • Since 2014 BHP has had 8 games where they ran less than 50 plays and in those games BHP is 7-1 (the only loss coming to T.L. Hanna this year).

Week 4 Preview

BHP has not played Pendleton since 2015 but look to take on another Anderson County school this Friday. BHP will be looking to bounce back to their winning ways while Pendleton, coming off a 50-0 win over Berea, will try to keep their momentum. And all of this with a backdrop of a hurricane making landfall.

Because these two teams did not play last season we will give you a refresher of where BHP stands statistically so far this season.

BHP Stats Through 3 Games

Rushing Yards: 83 rushes for 423 yards

Passing Yards: 38/66/1 for 670 yards

Individual Leaders

Rushing: Jaquez Dixon - 26 rushes for 176 yards and 1 TD

Passing: Camden Bratcher - 38/66/1 for 670 yards and 7 TDs

Receiving: Xavier Nance - 15 catches for 250 yards and 2 TDs

BHP Opponents Stats Through 3 Games

Total Yards: 191 plays for 1,187 yards

Rushing Yards: 135 rushes for 863 yards

Passing Yards: 26/56/2 for 324 yards

Fun With Small Sample Sizes

As we did last week, we want to have some more fun with small sample sizes. Only three games into the season, let’s take a look at the pace one of BHP’s offensive playmakers is on.

Projecting Regular Season Stats

Xaiver Nance
  • Season: Receiving - 50 receptions for 833 yards and 7 TDs

These projections would give Nance the 3rd most receptions in a season taking over his own mark from 2016. Combining these projections with his career stats so far, Nance will be only 3 receptions away form the most in BHP history.

Conclusion

BHP will be more than excited to get back on the field and put the loss behind them. It will be interesting to see if the passing game will be what BHP relies on because of how prolific it has been this year, or if they will fall back to a running game which is historically what the Bears are known for. It will also be great to see the defense back in action and see what adjustments and improvements are made.

We see BHP flexing their muscles this Friday night and coming away with an impressive win. BHP 54, Pendleton 10.

Nevertheless, this will be a great game and we should all support the team by showing up at home for the game. But if you cannot make it, be sure to follow us on twitter @bhp_bears for live updates.
