And the time has come. We will have waited 295 days since the Bears have taken the field and it is finally game week! BHP vs Powdersville, Week 1, First Game of the 2019 Season!
As the Bears prepare to take the field this week we want to give you a review of BHP’s past Week 1 games, as well as the last couple of matchups against Powdersville.
BHP has fared well in their first games of the season. Since 2000, BHP is 13-6 in opening games. However, since 2010 (Coach Blackston’s first season as head coach), BHP has an 8-1 record in those games. The only first game loss since 2010 was an away game against Laurens in 2012.
Since 2000, BHP has averaged 27.2 points per game while allowing 15.9 points per game in the first games of the season. Since 2010, BHP has averaged 32.7 points per game while allowing 12.8 points per game in the first games of the season.
BHP opens up on the road against fellow Anderson County team, the Powdersville Patriots. This will be the fourth matchup between the Bears and Patriots with BHP being undefeated against Powdersville.
The last time BHP faced Powdersville at Powdersville (2017), BHP incurred the most penalties in BHP history, 23-142. Nearly 18% of BHP’s 2017 penalties came in that game against Powdersville. Nevertheless, BHP came out on top, 41-21.
Last season BHP hosted Powdersville and put on one of their best offensive and defensive performances all season. BHP scored the most points against Powdersville than any other opponent last season. The Bears gained 11.4 yards per play last year against Powdersville, over 2.5 yards per play more than the second most.
Last season’s matchup with Powdersville was only the 9th time since 2010 that BHP scored over 50 points and allowed only a touchdown or less in a game.

Receiving Leader: Kiundre Hunter - 3 receptions for 13 yards
With nothing but opportunity lying ahead, BHP begins its 54th football season. As we get ready for the opening night of the 2019 season, we harken back to our Week 1 post from last season. All teams tout being undefeated and having a chance to accomplish goals before Game 1. However, after the first game, only 50% of those teams will have a winning record.
Remember how the wise old saying goes, “You have to win the first one to win them all” and that is exactly what BHP will be playing for this Friday against Powdersville.
