BHP finally got to take the field for the first game of the 2020 season. BHP opened the season with a 29 - 7 region win over Pendleton and started the season on the right track. However, the game showed both the impressive upside and the issues the Bears still have as a team. BHP now turns to take on one of the most storied high school football programs in the state, the Greer Yellow Jackets.
We are finally here, Game Week! Although later, with more uncertainty, and altogether stranger than we would have wanted, we have made it to the first game week of 2020. I would expect you may feel as I do, something as simple as Bear football is on Friday night is a welcomed distraction from our ever-mounting world issues. With that, let's jump into this week’s Bear Tracks post and turn our focus to football and Friday’s matchup against Pendleton.
With the season being right around the corner, we have started thinking about the upcoming slate of games and have come up with five major questions still outstanding. In this post we’ll lay out our five questions that will have to be answered for this Bear season.
This is our fourth week of designs. Because this will be our last for this current series, we wanted to show both a home and away uniform concept. We looked online and found inspiration in some other very modern concepts. Although this is a stark change from the more traditional look that BHP currently has, we like the modern aspects of this concept. The home uniform reminds me of the NFL color rush style.
This week’s concept takes inspiration from the idea of the two towns that merge to make the one team we cheer for on Friday Nights. We used BHP’s main two colors merging into each other as our base and as a metaphor for the two towns coming together for one cause. We tried a lot of different options for this concept but the white pants make the jersey and other color items pop even more.
Last week we started this uniform concept series with the Away HBTB Concept. This week we are back with a new Home uniform concept. Let me set the scene for this uniform concept. It’s a cool October Friday night and the Bears are about to take the field. Before they emerge from the field house, smoke begins to billow in front of the locker room doors. The team emerges through the smoke with these new uniforms on and sprint to the sideline with “2001” blaring as the fans going crazy.
The more I am self quarantining the more I am looking forward to football season. With that, we saw a tweet from the official BHP football twitter account (@BHP_Football) that some of you may have seen as well. In that tweet, they submitted BHP’s helmet to a statewide helmet design tournament. That got me thinking, what would the uniforms look like if I was in control of the uniform design?
As we end the season we want to celebrate the great performances by this team and their seniors. The last 4 years BHP has gone 35-12 and won 2 region championships. The 2018 senior class is the only other class under Coach Blackston who has won 2 region championships. We are also excited to see what is to come for the Bears. There will be a lot of positions that need to be filled and we expect players to step into those spots and put BHP back in contention for championships.
The weather turned colder, but BHP burned up the field with their rushing attack against York last Friday night. BHP opened the playoffs against York, a team they had never played before, but the outcome was as textbook as a BHP win could be. BHP leaned on the rushing attack and got huge contributions from the defense. With that win, BHP advances to take on Greenville in Round 2.
BHP came into the final game of the regular season with an outside chance to win the region championship. After a hard-fought game, BHP ended the season on a two-game losing streak and in third place in the region. The match-up against Daniel felt like many of the past: close and tough and it came down to the last drive of the game. With the loss, BHP ends the regular season with a record of 6-3 and 3-2 in the region. With the loss Friday night, BHP ends up in third place in the region. That places them in a matchup against York (Region 3, 4th place) in the first round of the playoffs. This matchup comes with a silver lining though, as BHP will take on York at home.
